Life Growth Snapshot:
- 18–42 days: The baby’s heart begins beating, while the eyes, ears, tongue, jaw, teeth, taste buds, fingers, and toes begin to develop. Brain waves can be detected, and the baby begins swallowing amniotic fluid.
- 8½ weeks: Fingerprints are forming, and the eyelids and palms become sensitive to touch.
- 12 weeks: Major organs are fully formed. The baby can kick, move, make a fist, bend its wrists, turn its head, and open and close its mouth.

- 20–26 weeks: The baby practices breathing by inhaling amniotic fluid and grows rapidly, increasing significantly in both weight and size.

- 37–40 weeks: As the lungs fully mature, labor is triggered and the baby is ready to be born.
