At Choices Pregnancy Centers, we understand that when the topic of abortion comes up, people turn to different sources of authority to back their claims. People on both sides of the issue might talk about human rights – those who are pro-abortion stress the rights of the mother, whereas pro-life people stress the rights of both the mother and the baby in the womb. Some people look to biology and science. But if you are a Christian, you may be wondering if the Bible says anything about abortion.

Some pro-abortion advocates argue that since the Bible doesn’t explicitly mention abortion, Christians have no grounds to speak on the issue. While it’s true that the Bible does not use the term “abortion,” it addresses many issues related to the topic.

Many core Christian beliefs, such as the word “Trinity,” aren’t explicitly mentioned in the Bible either. Understanding the Bible requires a thoughtful and deeper reading. For instance, while the word “racism” doesn’t appear in the Bible, numerous verses, including Galatians 3:28-29, clearly teach that racism is wrong.

Key Bible Verses on the Sanctity of Life

  • Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV): “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

This verse tells us that God knows us even before we are formed in the womb. It shows that every life has a purpose and is known by God from the very start.

  • Psalm 139:16 (ESV): “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

Psalm 139 speaks about God’s intimate knowledge and care for us even before we are born, suggesting that our lives are valued by God from the earliest stages.

  • Isaiah 49:5 (ESV): “And now the Lord says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength—”

Isaiah tells us that God forms us in the womb for specific purposes, emphasizing that our lives are meaningful from the very beginning.

This verse further affirms that God’s calling and purpose for us begin in the womb.

The Sacredness of the Womb

In biblical terms, the womb itself is considered a sacred and protected space. For instance, Psalm 110:3 speaks about the sanctity of life emerging from the womb, symbolizing a place of divine creation and protection.

Psalm 110:3 (ESV)

“Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.”

This imagery reinforces the view that life, from its very start, is precious and ordained by God.
