With the overturn of Roe V Wade, you might wonder how Planned Parenthood is taking this historical defeat. Their response has been significant and far-reaching. The organization is mounting a full-scale counterattack in an effort to convince the American people that, ever since June, our nation has been in a “health crisis”. 

Their own website claims that, “the U.S. Supreme Court pushed the country into a national health crisis with its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and take away the federal constitutional right to abortion” (Italics added).

This approach is purely for financial gain. By creating a “problem” (a health crisis), they can then enlist the public’s “help” (money) to offer a “solution” (more abortions).

That’s why Planned Parenthood is spending unprecedented amounts of money on lobbying efforts. It’s a full-scale attempt to regain their footing in society. 

Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund

Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund [1], the industry’s campaign and advocacy committee, has spent enormous amounts of money on lobbying efforts since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Open Secrets is a nonprofit organization that tracks political spending in the U.S. and its effect on public policy and elections. Their website reveals that “Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund spent an unprecedented sum lobbying during the second quarter of 2022 – right around the time of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.”

But the spending began before the decision dropped. According to Open Secrets, Planned Parenthood spent over $739,000 in the first half of 2022 alone on federal lobbying efforts. “The political advocacy arm of the reproductive health care nonprofit spent over $569,000 on lobbying in just three months — the most it has ever spent during the second quarter of a year,” an OpenSecrets analysis found. 

In other words, they were preparing in advance for the possible overturn of Roe V Wade. The counter-attack has not ceased in the ensuing months, either. The “non-profit” organization will spend a record $50 million on the November midterm elections in an effort to reestablish the practice of abortion in as many states as possible. Their efforts towards the midterm election include the launching of their new program, “Take Control” [2], which will aim at shaping voter sympathies.  

What is Planned Parenthood’s Strategy?

As evidenced in the “Take Control” campaign, or their slogan, “Care. No matter what,” Planned Parenthood primarily gains voters through creating an image of themselves as offering care and support for those in need. This is the same tactic they have always used, going back to their original founder, Margaret Sanger. 

A confirmed white supremacist, Sanger first opened abortion clinics in predominately Black neighborhoods with the express goal of controlling the “mass of negroes,” who “breed disastrously… from that portion of the population least intelligent and fit” [3].

Notice how she went about it. Sanger first deceived them by hiring black ministers to do the leg work of promoting abortion and making it seem benevolent. In Sanger’s words, “The most successful educational approach to the negro is through a religious appeal. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea.” 

As Sanger scholar George Grant described it, “The entire operation then was a ruse–a manipulative attempt to get Blacks to cooperate in their own elimination.” 

From its inception, Planned Parenthood has ruthlessly used lies and manipulation to gain power and persuade the population. 

Don’t Let Planned Parenthood Choose The Playing Field 

In the coming months, Planned Parenthood will use lies to gain their object. While it looks different than it did in Margaret Sanger’s day, the methods are still the same. 

They will use deceitful emotional appeals, slogans, and advertising to make it appear that millions of women are experiencing devastation and crises resulting from closed abortion clinics. However, pregnancy resource centers actually outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics 14 to 1. There are resources available to women, only they don’t make Planned Parenthood any money. 

What Can We Do?

Though we achieved a stunning victory last June, we must not grow complacent. Planned Parenthood is fighting back hard, and we must likewise maintain vigilance. As Christians, however, our weapons are very different, our most important task is prayer.

Politics do not get the credit for the overturn of Roe V Wade–God does. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7).
